Chapter 41

‘You wanted to see me, ma’am?’

Erin McKeown’s worried face appeared at the DCI’s open door just after eight on Wednesday morning.

‘Yes. Nothing to worry about, Erin. How’s your misper case going?’

‘Jaxon Arnold?’

‘Yes. I should confess I have an ulterior motive for asking.’

The young woman looked puzzled.

‘It wasn’t some kind of test, ma’am? You didn’t put Garth up to it?’

‘No. Nothing like that. I’m hoping you’ve made good progress because I think it’s connected to my case.’

McKeown looked up, surprised.

‘Oh, right. Well, I’ve checked up on Jaxon. He has a bit of a chequered past. He’s been in trouble off and on for years. Nothing too serious. Yet. Just the usual stuff – public order offences round the bonfires at the Twelfth – but it seems he was in danger of getting caught up with some of the local hoods. His father told me that he’d been coming under pressure to peddle drugs for them.

‘Then he got some money together and opened a wee business of his own. By all accounts he seemed to be doing quite well. It had only been going for a couple of months but he was working hard at it. All hours. He’d had bookings for a few weddings doing the party favours, some deejaying, arranging a photo booth and a chocolate fountain. That kind of thing.

‘What I’m looking into now is how he got the money to start his business. I think maybe some of the hoods helped him to get going and it’s time to pay them back. Maybe he couldn’t and they either scared him off or beat him up as a warning to others. I think if it was that we would have found him by now so my guess is he’s off somewhere hiding from them.’

‘Well, I can provide an answer for your question. He got a grant from the HATP to start his business. He was one of their success stories,’ Gawn said.

‘He was connected to the people in your case?’

‘Yes. And we think it’s possible that the spray in his swag bags was doctored to deliver a shot of K2.’

‘So he might have done that for someone and been paid off. He could be anywhere now on the money,’ McKeown said.

‘We don’t know. It’s not even confirmed yet that the K2 was in the spray bottles. That’s just my guess until the lab actually finds some. Do you know where Jaxon did his work?’ Gawn asked.

‘Yes. He has a lease on premises off Ravenhill Road. Just a small warehouse. More of a converted house really. It’s where he stores his materials.’

‘Have you been there?’ Gawn asked.

‘I had a look around the outside yesterday. His parents don’t have a key. I tried to look through the windows but it’s difficult to see anything. I questioned the other businesses but they hadn’t heard or seen anything out of the ordinary and they hadn’t seen Jaxon since last week either.’

‘I think we need Forensics to look it over. See if you can find who the letting agent is and get a spare key.
